Ursprünglich trug diese den Namen BOOM: The Incredible True Story of Online Poker. The Story of Online Poker.

Ich mag Bruce Lees Sprichwort ‚Be Like Water‘.

PF: Letzte Frage.
BET RAISE FOLD: The Story of Online Poker!

Original:

PokerFirma: Hi Jay, thanks that you take the time for us. It was a big project and now you’re (almost) finished. Is this a huge relief?
Jason Rosenkrantz: Haha, I’d say so. We’ve been working on this for almost three years and it’s exciting to be arriving at the point where the world can see what we’ve been up to. It’s less a relief that we’re completely finished, and more a relief that we think we were able to figure it out and make a good movie. The story of online poker was a tricky one to tame.

PokerFirma: The release is in June. What work do you still have to do. Or is it now ‚only‘ traveling & selling the finished product?
Jay: We are finishing up our soundtrack, making some final tweaks and readying the film for a final sound mix and color correction. At the same time, we’re trying to get us much attention as possible leading up until the release. To be a success, ultimately we’ll need everyone who has played a hand of poker to champion this movie. That’s our goal, at least.

PokerFirma: By the way selling. On which platforms will the movie be available?
Jay: We will be releasing online from our website. You can purchase the movie directly from us, streaming, DRM-free download, HD and mobile formats. There will be no restrictions so no matter where you live, you can buy it on release day, though we’ll only be available in English at first, we’re looking for volunteers to help us with translated subtitles. You can buy the standard version for $9.99 and the special edition, which will include some extras, for $12.99. We’ll open up pre-orders in May, where you’ll be able to pre-order both versions for cheaper.
After the initial release wave, we’re hoping to secure wider distribution on VOD platforms like Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, VUDU and so on. We’re open to all forms of distribution, but we’re committed to an initial online release because that’s where our audience lives, and they’ve been waiting for this film for a long time!

PokerFirma: Was there a time, where you struggled and thought, that you wouldn’t finish it ever?
Jay: Heh… finishing was never in doubt. We had to get this story told. Our investors were counting on us, and coming from the online poker community, knowing so many people impacted by the boom, being so personally affected ourselves… we had a sworn duty to finish and to make the best movie we could. But there were many times when we thought… wow, this is hard, this is going to take way longer than we thought it would.

PokerFirma: The new title is Bet Raise Fold which is a huge difference to BOOM!. Does this reflect the events of the Black Friday?
Jay: It does. The main reason we changed the title was because we wanted something that you could immediately recognize as a poker movie. The added bonus is that the words are the action buttons on online poker software, and that the actions are a kind of metaphor for the drama that unfolded during the online poker boom.

PokerFirma: And is ‚Fold‘ also your conclusion, I mean, do you think the time for online poker is over?
Jay: Personally, I think online poker is in its infancy. It’s been here for only about 10 years. That’s a blink in the grand scheme of things. The first online poker boom may be over, but who knows, that might just be only one hand in a very long session. Maybe that’s optimistic, but I love online poker! As for our conclusion, you’ll have to see the movie!

PokerFirma: You always said, that movie making is a huge thing. without going in to much details. Can you describe the working process?
Jay: Ryan sits alone in a room and stares at footage. He gets a sense of the story, and starts to cut together a scene set to temporary music. He sends me the scene to look at. We discuss and he goes back to the drawing board to try to improve it. Later we string the scenes into sequences and sequences into acts, and often we find that a scene we thought we had figured out doesn’t work anymore in respect to the larger movements. There’s a lot of painful rinsing and repeating. That’s just a slice of the filmmaking side. Then there’s a lot of logistical planning. There’s a lot of phone call making and emailing and scheduling and financial maneuvering. A ton of variable juggling and problem solving. On the producing side, you have to be a people person and manage personalities and emotions. In a way it’s just like playing high stakes poker.

PokerFirma: Can you roughly say, how many working hours (all persons combined) are necessary for one single minute of the movie?
Jay: Lol. Too many. I have no idea. Way more than anyone will ever know, but for me, the experience was worth it. I learned a great deal about making movies, and I was able to help tell a story that mattered a lot to my life.

PokerFirma: On your blog you wrote, that you literately sleept in the editing room. For how long, and how did you manage this?
Jay: Just a week. There was a pull-out couch and a chocolate labradoodle that woke me up every morning. It wasn’t that bad.

PokerFirma: You once told me, that you are a „story nerd“ and that you „like [to] explore other people’s realities“. You have a degree in Film and Television and just finished your first feature film. Is this your future or will this be just one part of your life?
Jay: I don’t know what the future holds right now. I’m writing and developing some other ideas that aren’t poker related, but that are somewhat inspired by lessons I’ve learned from poker. I’m interested to see what kinds of doors this movie opens. I like new challenges, and I like learning, and using the skills I have in new and interesting ways. I like Bruce Lee’s saying „be like water.“ I’m just going to go with the flow.

PokerFirma: You’re one of the ‚old school young guns‘. You experienced the golden age, but also the Black Friday. In retrospective, do you think that April the 15th had some positive effects, too? I mean, a lot people of the ‚holla balla generation‘ seem to have grown up since then.
Jay: It was a coming-of-age event. People who were living carefree lives were suddenly forced to deal with very serious, grownup issues. Some people who may not have been cut out to be poker players in the long run were given an early wake up call, a chance to reflect on whether or not they were in the right place. I guess you can always find a silver lining… but on the whole, Black Friday was just a terrible thing to have happen. It was inevitable, but it was horrible for so many people.

PokerFirma: You once said in an interview, that you wanna find out if Natalie Portman likes pokerplayers. Is this whole movie project only a new way to get in touch with her?
Jay: Everything I do is partly an attempt to get more famous and attract hot actresses who like poker.

PokerFirma: Final question. What are your plans for this summer?
Jay: I’ll be at the WSOP for a bit. Other than that… BET RAISE FOLD: The Story of Online Poker!
