Heute Abend kehren die November Nine in das Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino zurück. Es geht um die Entscheidung beim $10.000 Main Event der World Series of Poker 2013 (WSOP). Ebenfalls mit am Start ist Michiel Brummelhuis. Bevor es für den niederländischen Poker-Pro nach Las Vegas ging, hat er mit PokerFirma ein Interview gemacht.

PokerFirma: Hi, wie geht es dir?
Michiel Brummelhuis: Gut, wirklich gut. Ich fliege am Donnerstag, bin also schon auf dem Absprung. Aber nun ist alles geregelt.
PF: Wie findest du das Konzept der November Nine? Ist es praktisch, weil du viel Zeit zur Vorbereitung hast, oder doch eher stressig, weil es eine so lange Wartezeit ist?
MB: Ein bisschen was von beidem, […] ich mag es. Es ist ein Spaß, weil du die ganze Aufmerksamkeit der Medien bekommst. Aber es ist auch ein wenig stressig, […] wegen der ganzen Warterei.
Wenn du im Juli einfach weiterspielst, ist es denke ich einfacher. Nun kommen meine ganzen Freunde und meine Familie und es gibt die ganze Aufmerksamkeit. Vielleicht ist der Stresspegel ein wenig höher, wobei ich nicht gestresst bin […] Auf jeden Fall] ist es viel Spaß, wegen der Aufmerksamkeit.
PF: Gibt es einen großen Hype in den Niederlanden?
MB: Ja, von den großen Medien bekomme ich viel Aufmerksamkeit. Heute gehe ich […] in eine bekannte Unterhaltungsrunde im TV. So etwas ist schon nett. Und ich war schon im Radio […] Aber es gibt keinen wirklich großen Hype.
In Holland ist es für die großen Poker Sites, wie beispielsweise meinem Sponsor 888, oder anderen Online Firmen nicht erlaubt Werbung zu machen […].
PF: Wie viel Zeit hast du in die Vorbereitung investiert?
MB: Ich habe zweimal eine Simulation mit meinen Freunden gemacht. Wir haben einfach die Tische simuliert, meine Freund und ich. Wir spielten JC Tran, Benefield und all die anderen Jungs. Das war einiges an Spaß und ich habe viel daraus gelernt.
Vor allem in welche Spots du kommen kannst und was die anderen Spieler machen. Ich bin in einem kniffeligen Spot mit meinem Stack. […]
PF: Ich glaube, es ist nicht einfach, [du bietest in die Big Stacks wie JC Tran].
MB: Ja, die werden viel eröffnen. Dann gibt es noch Leute wie Ryan Riess und Lehavot die mich 3-betten können und ich werde viel folden müssen, da ich 7. in Chips bin und es zwei Spieler gibt, die früh aggressiv aufspielen können. Also ja, es ist ein schwerer Spot für mich.
PF: Es ist ein starker Final Table. Hast du versucht viele Informationen über die anderen Spieler zu bekommen oder kennst du sie schon gut?
MB: Ich habe mit einigen von ihnen natürlich schon die Tage zuvor gespielt. […] Also weiß ich schon ein wenig etwas über sie. Aber ich weiß nicht wirklich viel über sie online, vielleicht von ein oder zwei ein klein wenig. Alle Dinge, die man eben im TV sehen kann, oder bei Berichterstattern wie PokerNews […] Man bekommt eine Idee davon, wie sie spielen. Du weißt schon, wer ist kreativ, wer ist weniger kreativ.
PF: Hast du dir einen Coach genommen oder nur mit Freunden gespielt?
MB: Nein, nur mit Freunden. Ich bin schon neun oder zehn Jahre dabei. Also brauche ich keinen Coach. Ich habe als MTT-Spieler angefangen aber vor ein oder zwei Jahren zum Cash Game gewechselt. Es läuft dort für mich viel besser. Und ich habe viel live gespielt, auch innerhalb der letzten neun bis zehn Jahre, also glaube ich zu wissen, was ich zu tun habe.
PF: Wie oft hast du dir gedacht „Was wäre, wenn ich gewinne“?
MB: Dass ich es gewinnen kann? Ja, keine Ahnung. Ich weiß es nicht, wirklich. Ich kann nicht mal darüber nachdenken, daran zu gewinnen. Für mich ist es … es ist für mich einen Schritt nach dem anderen machen. Und sollte ich gewinnen, dann … Ja, dann wird es verrückt.
Aber ich weiß nicht. Ich sehe einfach zu Schritt für Schritt zu nehmen und hoffe zwei oder drei Stufen nehmen zu können. Um mindestens siebter zu werden. Ich denke wirklich nicht darüber nach, zu gewinnen.
Ich mache es hauptsächlich wegen des Geldes. Ich will so viel Geld wie möglich und keine dummen Fehler machen.
Ich bin Siebter, also weißt du … es ist ein ganz langer Weg, um Erster zu werden […] Natürlich macht es einen enormen Unterschied, ob du Erster oder Zweiter wirst. Dann schreibst du Geschichte. Das ist der Unterschied, aber das Geld ist für mich auch wichtig.
PF: Wo siehst du dich selbst in fünf Jahren?
MB: Ich weiß es nicht. Ich glaube, ich werde jedes Jahr das Main Event spielen. Einfach weil es ein tolles Turnier ist. Ich mag die Live […] Events. [Sie] sind einfach großartig, vor allem wenn Freund von mir mitspielen und wir eine tolle Zeit haben. Ich mag es mindestens drei vielleicht vier bis sieben Events pro Jahr zu spielen […] es ist einfach viel Spaß. Und ein wenig Cash Game spielen, weil es auch Spaß macht.
Sollte ich viel Geld gewinnen, also Erster, Zweiter oder Dritter werden, dann kann man natürlich auch andere Dinge tun. Ich würde gerne eine eigene Internet-Firma starten, aber ich glaube, ich werde auch immer Poker spielen.
PF: Du hast erwähnt […] dass viele deiner Freund mit dir nach Las Vegas kommen. Glaubst du, es wird die lauteste Rail?
MB: Ah, nein ich glaube nicht. Weißt du, Jay Faber. Er lebt in Las Vegas und alle seine Freunde werden da sein. Es werden mindestens 250 Leute kommen. Von Holland kommen vielleicht […] so 70 oder 80, es werden als weniger sein. Aber ich glaube schreien werden sie auch.
PF: Hast du schon Pläne für nach dem Final Table, wie auch immer das Ergebnis sein wird?
MB: Ja. Wir haben das größte Pokerturnier in Holland. Es nennt sich Master Classics of Poker und ist direkt im Anschluss an den Final Table. Also werde ich direkt nach Hause fliegen und nach Amsterdam zurückkehren, da ich der Botschafter der Turnierserie bin.
Also muss ich dort sein und ich will auch alle Games spielen. Und dazu ist es nur rund zwei Minuten von meinem Zuhause entfernt, also wird es eine tolle Woche.
An alle deutschen Spieler. Ihr solltet auf jeden Fall kommen. Das Main Event ist ein 4.000 Re-Entry, also gibt es einen großen Preispool. Das erste Turnier am Samstag ist ein 1.500 Re-Entry und es gibt noch ein 10k High Roller Re-Entry. Es ist also so groß wie bei der EPT und es wird eine großartige Woche und es ist nicht weit von Deutschland weg. Natürlich gibt es auch jede Menge Spaß in Amsterdam, ihr solltet also definitiv kommen.
PF: Das hört sich gut an. Sie haben das Turnier wegen dir verschoben?
MB: Ja eine ganze Reihe meiner Freunde plant nach Vegas zu kommen und sie wollten auch das Event spielen. Und natürlich konnte das Casino, es mit meiner Funktion als Botschafter kombinieren […] es ist also echt toll, dass der Terminplan verschoben wurde.
PF: Letzte Frage. Ich habe gehört du und deine Freundin haben Nachwuchs bekommen?
MB: Ja, wir habe gerade erst ein Baby bekommen. Mein Junge […] ist nun sechseinhalb Wochen alt.
PF: Gratulation!
MB: Danke dir, danke dir. Das ist natürlich eine große Veränderung in meinem Leben. Vielleicht die Größte.
PF: Definitiv. Glaubst du, dass du nun ein weniger gesetzter bist? Siehst die Welt ein wenig anders, da es nun wichtiger Dinge, wie beispielsweise die Familie, gibt?
MB: Ja. Ich glaube, das hat sich für mich geändert. Du musst verantwortlicher sein, mehr voraus planen. Und es ist einfacher, wenn du ein Haufen Geld in Vegas machst. Es wird sicherlich eine nette Zukunft für uns.

PF: How do you like the concept of the November Nine? Is it handy because you have a lot of time to relax, or is it rather stressful because you have a long period of waiting?
MB: It’s near both edges. Let’s say it like that. It’s fun because of all the media attention you’re getting. But it’s also a little bit more stressful […] Because of all the waiting. When you just play on in July it’s easier I guess. Now all my friends and family are coming and there’s a lot of media attention. So the stress level might be little bit higher. But I’m not too stressed, […] it’s also a lot of fun because of all the attention.
PF: Is there a big hype in the Netherlands?
MB: Ah yes, from all the big media I’ve got a lot of attention. Tonight I’m going to […] a well known TV discussion program. So that’s nice. And I’ve been on the radio […] so that is fun. But there is not a really big hype. Because in Holland it’s not allowed for the big poker sites like 888, my sponsor, or other big online companies to make commercials.[…]
PF: How much time do you or did you spend on preparation?
MB: I did. Twice I did the simulation with friends. We just simulated the tables and my friends and I. We were playing JC Tran, Benefield and all the other guys. So that was a lot of fun. I learned a lot from that. Especially to see in what spots you can come and what other players will do. I’m in a difficult spot with my stack size. So that was fun to see.
PF: Yes I guess it’s not easy. I think [you have to bet into the big stacks like JC Tran] MB: Yeah, they probably open a lot. I got some other guys like Ryan Riess and Lehavot they can 3-bet me and I will have to fold a lot of hands because I’m 7th in chips and they are two players that can boss earlier. So yes, I’m in a difficult spot.
PF: It’s also a tough final table. Did you try to get a lot of info about the other players or do you know them well?
MB: I played with some of them the days before of course. On the days five, six and seven of the main event. So i know some things of the guys. But I don’t know much about them online. Maybe from one or two guys I know a little bit. All the things you can see on TV or you can see on live reporting on poker news […]. You get an idea of how they play. So you know, who is creative and who is a little less creative, so that’s fun to see.
PF: Did you get a coach or did you just play with your friends?
MB: Ah no. Just with my friends. I’m around for nine or ten years. So I don’t need a coach. I started […] as an MTT player but recently a year or two ago I made a step to play cash. And it’s going way better for me. But I’ve still got the experience from the MTTs I played. And I played a lot of live also the last nine or ten years, so I think I know what I have to do.
PF: How many times did you think “what if I win this”? […] Is this regularly or was this just at the beginning?
MB: That I can win it? Yes, well I don’t know. I don’t know, really. I can’t even think about winning it. It’s just for me, it’s taking it step by step and if I’ll win it then.. – Yeah that’s gonna be crazy. But I don’t know. I’m just looking for taking it step by step and hope to make at least two three steps. At least coming seventh. I really don’t think about winning. First of all I’m doing it for the money. I just want to make as much money as possible and don’t make stupid mistakes. Yeah you know, I’m seventh so it’s gonna take a long long ride to get first. […] Of course first or second makes a lot of difference also because of you’re making history. So that’s the difference, but the money is for me okay as well.
PF: Where do you see yourself in five years?
MB: I don’t know. Well I think I will play the main event every year. Because it’s just a great event. I like live […] Tournaments. [They] are just great and especially tournaments where friends of mine are going and we have a fun time. And I like to play at least three […] maybe from four to seven a year, you know. And they are just fun. And let’s play a little bit cash games online because that’s fun as well. And of course I wanna do things beside it. When you make a lot of money, maybe when I get first or second or third, you can do some other things as well. And I like to maybe start an own internet company. But i think I always, always be playing poker as well.
PF: You mentioned […] that a lot of your friends will be in Las Vegas with you. Do you think that they will be the loudest Rail?
MB: Ah no I do’t think so because. You know Jay Faber, well he lives in Vegas, he got all his friends there and there like 250 people coming at least. From Holland there gonna be […] maybe 70 or 80, so it will be a lot less people. But I think they will scream as well.
PF: Do you have plans for after the final table, whatever the result is?
MB: Yes. We have the biggest poker tournament in Holland. It’s called the Master Classics of Poker and it’s directly after the final table. So I immediately fly home back to Amsterdam because I’m the Ambassador for the tournament series. So I have to be there and I want to play all those games as well. And it’s like two minutes from my own house so that’s gonna be a great week. So for all the German guys you definitely have to come there because the main event is 4.000 re-entry so it’s gonna be a big prize pool. And the first tournament is on Saturday 1.500 re-entry. And there is also a 10k high roller re-entry. So it’s as big as an EPT and it’s gonna be a great week so it’s not too far from Germany and it’s fun in Amsterdam of course. So you definitely have to come there.
PF: That sounds good. The re-scheduled the tournament because of you?
MB: Yes. Because a lot of friends of mine were planning to come to Vegas were also the guys who want to play the event. And of course the casino could combine it with my Ambassador ship so yeah that’s a good combination. I think it’s really nice to move the schedule.
PF: Last question. I heard you and your girlfriend had a baby?
MB: Yes, we just had a baby. My boy […] he’s six and a half weeks old now.
PF: Congratulations!
MB: Thank you. Thank you. So that’s a big change in my life now. Maybe the biggest.
PF: Definitely. Do you think you are more settled now? See the world different, now that there are more important things like family?
MB: Yeah. I think that changed for me. You got to be more responsible, plan more ahead and it’s easier if I make a lot of money in Vegas. Sure it’s gonna be a nice future for us.
